How it works

Exclusivity uses IU’s published standard: +20% for 14 days, +40% for 30 days. The deposit (50% over $1,000), the kill fee (at least 50% once work has started), two included edit rounds and payment within 30 days come from the IU Fair Deal.

IU has not published a standard price for paid ads, whitelisting or extra edit rounds, so those lines use your own numbers and are marked “your number”. Nothing is filled in for you.

Questions

What is the difference between organic and paid usage?

Organic usage means the brand shares or reposts your content on its own channels without paying to promote it. Paid usage means it spends money to run your content as an ad. Paid usage reaches far more people than your post, so it is licensed and priced separately.

What is whitelisting or Spark Ads?

The brand runs ads from your account, under your name (on TikTok these are Spark Ads; on Instagram and Facebook, partnership ads). Your audience and reputation are part of the ad, so it is usually priced higher than the brand running the ad from its own account.

How long should usage rights last?

Always give an end date. Short licences (one to three months) are common for paid usage; “in perpetuity” or “all media” means the brand can use your work forever and should cost a great deal more — or be refused.

How do I price exclusivity?

IU’s standard is +20% of the fee for 14 days and +40% for 30 days, in the brand’s product category only. Longer or wider exclusivity means you turn down other work, so price it as the deals you would lose.

What is a kill fee?

What the brand pays if it cancels after you have started. The Fair Deal says at least 50% of the fee: work started is work paid.
